Admins Who Don’t Give Hiatuses

Please don’t get upset at me for my opinions/rants. They are not meant to be cruel or malicious in any way, shape, or form. I just like sharing my opinions sometimes.

[[MORE]]I am an admin. I am a roleplayer. I know that real life can get in the way of roleplaying, but I also know it can be super annoying when a player who is central to the plot just… vanishes. That’s why hiatuses are so important. Hiatuses give roleplayers an opportunity to take some personal time or deal with real world commitments, and allows admins to know how long players are gone for.
Story time. I used to be in a roleplay on Z’s shitlist before I was part of the RPCW community. At the time, I was going through some really rough personal stuff. I had just been diagnosed with depression and severe anxiety and had started self-harming as a way to vent my frustrations. I could barely handle going to class and prepping for finals, let alone being active as my OC on their roleplay. I wrote to the admins, explaining my situation and requesting a hiatus of a week or two. They turned me down, and said if I wasn’t active every day, they would kick me out. I loved my OC, and I may bring him back as an indie character at some point, so I kept playing, even though it made me more stressed out.
Looking back, I clearly should have made a different decision. Taking care of yourself is more important than roleplaying. But that isn’t the point of this rant.
The point of this rant is hiatuses or hiati or whatever you call them are important, and it is really, really shitty when admins refuse to give them. There’s a huge difference between someone just randomly leaving and a dedicated player needing a break. I’ve actually reviewed roleplays that don’t give hiatuses and it always pisses me off. Yes, I get you want an active roleplay, but you got to understand that players have a life outside of Tumblr. Nobody is making you give hiatuses that are months long, but there’s nothing wrong with giving a player a week or two off.
Anyway, if you are a good admin, don’t you want your players happy?
