naturehomie:

I’ve seen a lot of guides both on tumblr and the internet in general that have the most backward piece of advice when writing blind characters ever.

“Blindfold yourself and walk around for a little bit to see what being blind feels like!”

No.

And here’s why.

1. Unless your character has just freshly been blinded, there is literally no possible way for you to understand what it’s like to be blind. You’ve (presumably) had your sight your entire life and wandering around without it for an hour or so isn’t going to teach you what it’s like to not have that sense. It’s not even going to come remotely close.

2. Honestly, I feel like this is obvious, but guess not: you could hurt yourself. Blind people have learned to navigate through their settings with their safety in mind, at all times. They understand how to angle themselves, how to move forward, what steps to take and how to take them. Because they’ve been blind and have had years or more to teach themselves how to do this or they have had medical professionals teach them how to do this (in the case of people who have been blinded rather than been born blind). No matter how well you think you know your surroundings, the second you take away your sight, you don’t know anything. You could do as little as stub your toe to trip and seriously injure yourself. So just don’t.

3. Probably the most important reason. You’re being an insensitive ableist jerk. Just like people who sit in a wheelchair to “see what its like”, you as someone who isn’t blind, attempting to know what its like with the privilege of being able to just taking off the blindfold, are being incredibly problematic. It isn’t fair to people who are blind that you can put a piece of cloth over your eyes and pretend to see what life is like for them just to be able to go back to your able bodied self.

Honestly, it’s just in poor taste and from what I’ve gathered from the blind community while doing actual research, it’s downright stupid. There are plenty of other ways to research for a blind character that don’t include stumbling around your house like an idiot. What you need to do is spend more than five minutes googling and actually take the time to sift through that wonderful thing called the internet to find detailed personal accounts of actual blind people to tell you what it’s like. Then and only then can you hope to write an accurate portrayal for your character.

Hi Catherine! I'm looking for a supernatural RPG, but maybe a fresh take on it, not the typical "there's this town, and there are vampires, werewolves and witches in it!" - do you happen to know any? I'd be so thankful! I'm looking for a place for a character I wrote, and supernatural always is my first take. But suggestions for awesome RPs which accept OCs would be really helpful as well - the genre doesn't really matter. Thank you.

Springtown looks super cool! Ditto Bindlebrim! Both are really unique supernatural roleplays.

Random question, but how would you tag a character with split personality disorder? Like would it just be best to tag them non binary. Both the personalities are dominant, so I'd feel uncomfortable tagging them male or female. I guess non binary works, but I was wondering if you knew of any better tags to use!

Given that you call it split personality disorder and not dissociative personality disorder which is the preferred term, I will be assuming you haven’t done a ton of research on it.

However, I think you shouldn’t even worry about gender identity, etc until you do a bit more research, and preferably talk to someone who does have DID.

Do you know what language they do speak? Or alternatively, someone that speaks both English and their language so they can translate? Depending on where they're from, they may be unaware that it's a slur and it's best to handle the situation very gently.

I had another student who spoke English and Cantonese (one of my best friends, actually) translate for me, and the international student said they understood the English. What concerns me is they said the n word after both myself and the head of the intercultural center at my school politely explained why it is not okay for someone who isn’t black to use it, and now half my group feels really unsafe around this person.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN A STUDENT WHO DOESNT SPEAK ENGLISH USES THE N WORD 4 TIMES IN ONE DAY, INCLUDING IN A FORUM WITH BLACK STUDENTS

It was the winter of 2014, and that’s a fact because everyone here can agree on it. We can all recall the tensions between countries, the fear of a nuclear war, and the growing threats in Europe and the Middle East. However, no one here can say that they remember much about the disease.
Someone made it their business to count and I’m told that the date is now June 19, 2021. London is as empty as it’s always been since the pandemic. The streets are cracked, the buildings are crumbling. Every waking moment we fear and yearn for some new company – both terrified that they’d rather see us dead, and lonely beyond words.
Life goes on, though. So does death. We do our best to avoid it and just keep going, until we can’t.

Wildfire is a literate, novella-style RPG. We proudly promote diversity in gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and more with our character skeletons. We are currently accepting applications and are on the look for members who wish to develop their writing and character-building skills. You can learn more by using the links below.

THE GREAT AMERICANA is on the hunt for ADMINS
WHAT IS THE GREAT AMERICANA? —

The Great Americana is an up and coming “legit serious” roleplay. It is set at the Vox Family Circus in 1946 in the American Midwest. It combines themes of crime, history, noir, oppression, and union into one comprehensive community. There are thirty characters planned for the first batch of all shapes and sizes. After finishing our last few pages, there is only one more thing we need before opening things up — a second, or even third, admin.

EXPECTATIONS —

This admin would write biographies for premade characters, answer questions on the main, brainstorm events and tasks, take care of organization, and do everything else the original admin will do. Most of all, Americana is looking for an admin with experience. We have many priorities: an enjoyable roleplaying environment, an immense amount of representation, and a tight-knit OOC community.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE ADMIN APPLICATION, and we hope to see you soon! Direct any and all questions, comments, or curiosities here.
